Vodka is killing a lot of Russian men
February 1 , 2014
Russian men who binge-drink vodka risk dying before the age of 55. A new study, which tracked 151,000 men between 1999 to 2010 found that those who drank over three half-liter bottles of vodka each week, had a 35 percent chance of dying an early death.
"Russians clearly drink a lot, but it's this pattern of getting really smashed on vodka and then continuing to drink that is dangerous," a lead researcher said. "The rate of men dying prematurely in Russia is totally out of line with the rest of Europe."
An expert mentioned that changing this scenario would require a cultural adjustment since "it just seems to be part of being in guy in Russia that you are expected to drink heavily."
