Virgin Galactic spacecraft crashes, pilot dead
November 1 , 2014
One pilot died and another was seriously injured when Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo crashed during a test flight over California’s Mojave desert.
The spacecraft’s test flight was linked to the company’s space tourism plans.
One pilot was found dead on the ground. The second, who probably deployed a parachute, was taken to hospital.
Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, said he would persevere with the commercial space travel venture in spite of the “devastating loss”. Chief executive of Virgin Galactic George Whitesides said, “Space is hard, and today was a tough day.”
