Venezuela Votes on National Constituent Assembly
July 30 , 2017
Venezuela is all set to vote for electing representatives to the new National Constituent Assembly that would have the power of rewriting the constitution. President Nicolás Maduro considers this vote the most important step for bringing back peace in the country. Opposition has boycotted the vote calling it a step towards power grab by Maduro government. The US called this election an “incredible threat to democratic institutions”. Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, CNE, has guaranteed transparency. Since April there has been violent protests throughout Venezuela that left over 100 dead and hundreds more wounded. Protesting opposition and government blame each other for the violence.
