Venezuela president blames telenovelas for crime
January 22 , 2014
President Nicolas Maduro has blamed telenovelas for the increasing crime in Venezuela. He mentioned that soap operas teach the wrong things to young viewers and glamorize violence and drugs.
Maduro specifically pointed at De Todas Maneras Rosa, which shows a former and psychopathic beauty queen poisoning her own mother for personal reasons. It's not clear if the government will do anything to impose harsh rules over programming.
"There are almost no guns in Venezuelan telenovelas," a soap opera creator said. "There are a number of things that aren't shown for fear of being fined." The Venezuelan Observatory of Violence seems to consider the lack of punishment for the increase in crimes. Moreover, the government's count suggest that there are between 9 to 15 million illegal firearms in the country.
