Venezuela opposition banned from taking part in the 2018 presidential election

  • Nicolas Maduro, the President of Venezuela, has stated that the main opposition parties have been barred from contesting in the presidential election that is to be held next year. Media reports quoted the Maduro as saying that only the parties which participated in the mayoral polls held on Sunday can take part in the presidential elections. Leaders of the opposition parties such as Justice First, Popular Will and Democratic Action stated that the electoral system was biased and boycotted the vote.
