Venezuela announces election date

  • An election to replace late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez will be held on April 14, the country's electoral commission announced on Saturday.

The announcement comes a day after Chavez's favored successor, Nicolas Maduro, was appointed acting president.

Hugo Chavez died on March 5 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Maduro will run as the ruling party candidate with Henrique Capriles likely to stand for the opposition.

Capriles lost to Chavez in last October's election.
