US Senate Votes in Favor of Gina Haspel Confirming Her as the New CIA Director

  • The US Senate has voted 54-45 in favor of Gina Haspel, confirming her ascent to become the first ever female director of CIA. Reports say it’s the slimmest vote margin from the Senate, in around seven decades, to approve a CIA nominee. The 61 year old veteran spy Gina Haspel has spent around 33 years as undercover agent and is a divisive figure among political circles concerning her alleged involvement in harsh interrogation program of CIA after 9/11. Though her ascension was possible because of the 6 Democrat votes in favor of the Republicans, senior intelligence officials were robustly supportive of her ascension to the position of CIA Director.
