US raises concern over 'arbitrary detention' of dissidents in Cuba

  • The US has expressed concern over the reported detentions of the Cuban dissidents on Tuesday, 30 December. According to activists, the Cuban police started arresting organizers hours prior to the protest in Havana's Revolution Square. The dissidents were of the opinion that the protest was planned to test the ability of Cuban communist government to accept criticism. The official communique of the US government condemned “continued harassment and repeated use of arbitrary detention” to “silence critics.” According to an opposition activist, 51 dissidents were detained and 15 were put behind the bars. It was only on 17 December that the US and Cuba jointly announced their decision to normalize ties. ( Where is US and Cuba )
