US may face 'mega-drought' after 2050: Scientists
February 13 , 2015
The US could witness a once-in-a-millennium drought in the latter half of this century, scientists say.
The American central plains and south-west are heading for “mega-droughts”, which are of a far greater magnitude than what dry areas like California are currently witnessing.
Such droughts persisted for several decades in the 12th and 13th centuries, but have never been experienced in recorded US history, according to Ben Cook, the author of the new study that has appeared in the Science Advances journal.
Research by Cook and his team shows that after 2050, the southwest and the central plains are likely to shift to mega drought-like conditions.
