US defends raid that led to death of hostages
December 8 , 2014
The US has defended the failed special forces raid in Yemen that resulted in the deaths of an American and a South African being held hostage by the al-Qaeda, media reports said.
US officials said they were not aware that Pierre Korkie, the South African teacher who was set to be freed in days, was also being held with US photojournalist Luke Somers at the mountain site that was the target of the raid.
The two hostages were reportedly shot by militants at the time of the raid.
