US: 20 injured, two buildings collapsed after explosion in New York

  • Around 20 people were injured after an explosion ripped through two buildings in New York City, leading to their collapse.

The subsequent blaze that engulfed four buildings was tackled by scores of fire-fighters.

There have been no immediate reports of missing people in the accident, which is being linked to gas utilities work carried out on one of the buildings.

Emergency services reached the scene within three minutes.

Last year, eight people were killed and some 50 injured in a gas explosion in East Harlem, a neighborhood in Upper Manhattan.
