Unmanned rocket explodes seconds after launch
October 29 , 2014
An unmanned rocket blew up over eastern Virginia on Tuesday evening, October 22, seconds after it was launched from the Wallops Flight Facility, according to media reports.
The NASA-contracted rocket and spacecraft was carrying some 5,000 pounds of cargo to the International Space Station at the time of the midair explosion that produced massive flames.
The mission was worth over $200 million.
A NASA official said the failure reflected the difficultly of “this task of delivering cargo to the space station.”
