Ukraine troops recapture Donetsk airport after 'mass operation'

  • Ukraine’s military said on Sunday, January 18, that a “mass operation” by government troops has retaken the strategically important Donetsk airport, which was in rebel hands.

The assault to recapture the airport in eastern Ukraine marks an escalation of fighting in the region, which has continued despite the ceasefire agreement in September.

A senior official of the defense forces said the troops had been successful in “almost completely cleaning” the airport area, adding that three soldiers died in the fighting and 31 were wounded.
