Ukraine marked its Independence Day with a show of force on Sunday, August 24, with troops marching through capital Kiev and weapons on display.
Government soldiers are fighting pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine to take back control of areas, including the key rebel-held cities of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s president, accused Russia of “aggression,” and pledged an investment of around £2 billion to bolster the strength of the armed forces.
Meanwhile, rebels held an “anti-independence” event in Donetsk.
