Turkey Issues Decree Dismissing over 18,000 Civil Servants before Lifting the State Emergency

  • After the convincing re-election of President Tayyip Erdogan and a day prior to his swearing in ceremony on Monday, Turkey has dismissed over 18,000 civil servants on Sunday by issuing a decree. Issuance of the decree comes at a time as the Erdogan government is likely to lift the on-going 2-year old emergency by this month. Reports say around half of the dismissed civil servants belong to the police force, 5,000 personnel from the armed forces, and 199 academics from different universities in Turkey.  In a reported statement, Turkey has said the public servant dismissal decree was issued for combating threats to the country’s national security.
