Tunisian opposition politician Chokri Belaid shot dead in Tunis

  • Tunisian opposition politician Chokri Belaid was shot dead on Wednesday outside his home in the capital, Tunis, according to his brother and officials.

Belaid was shot in the neck and head while on his way to work. It is not known who is responsible for the attack.

He was the coordinator of the left-leaning Democratic Patriots party and a staunch opponent of the government of the Islamic Ennahda party, which heads a coalition following Tunisia's first post-Arab Spring election in October 2011.

On Saturday, he accused "mercenaries" hired by the Ennahda party of attacking a Democratic Patriots meeting.
