Trump says he may use Executive Orders to Ban TikTok from the United States
August 1 , 2020
The US President Donald Trump has said on Friday night the United States is going to ban TikTok, the popular video-sharing app. He made the statement aboard Air Force One while he was returning to Washington from Florida after a fundraising trip. After a report emerged that Microsoft is in talks with TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to buy the popular app, the US President said that he doesn’t support the deal. Trump said that he can utilize his emergency economic powers (through executive order) to ban TikTok from the US. In a statement, TikTok has said in a statement that the app is a job creator and at the same time committed to the privacy of its 100 million users in the US. The American Civil Liberties Union has called the US President’s threat of banning the app as “a danger to free expression.” The White House has ramped up its concerns about the popular video-sharing app as the laws in China can compel any Chinese company to hand over data it has collected on users to the government of China.
