Tough electoral battle between Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena in Sri Lanka election

  • Polls are taking place in Sri Lanka under tense circumstances as President Mahinda Rajapaksa fights off the challenge from Maithripala Sirisena, the former health minister, in what is being described as a very closely fought election.

Rajapaksa, who is aiming for a third presidential term, called early polls in anticipation of an easy win. But Sirisena’s unexpected entry into the fray has revitalized the opposition.

Analysts say that violence or claims of unfair practices could hit the electoral process if the results are a close call.
