Thousands flee as Typhoon Koppu batters Philippines
October 18 , 2015
Typhoon Koppu has battered northern Philippines, smashing houses and toppling power lines as thousands of people on its path fled their homes.
The typhoon made landfall near Casiguran town on Luzon island, bringing wind speeds of up to 200km/hr and causing 12 feet high tides. Weather officials have predicted three days of torrential rain that could lead to heavy flooding. Landslides may also occur.
About 10,000 people have been displaced from Luzon so far, and flight and ferries in the northern areas cancelled.
