Taliban and Afghan officials hold talks in Qatar, but downplay expectations
May 3 , 2015
Afghan and Taliban officials are holding “reconciliation” talks in the Gulf state of Qatar, media reports say.
But both sides have downplayed any expectations from the Doha meeting. It is also not clear which officials are participating in the talks.
The Taliban has described the meeting as a “research conference” and said the participants were not representing any party or government but were there in an “individual capacity”.
Echoing that view, the spokesperson for the Afghan president said Afghan officials were attending the talks in their “personal capacity”.
