Syria: US special forces to 'assist' in fight against Isis

  • US president Barack Obama has ordered up to 50 troops from special forces to “assist” in the fight against Islamic State in Syria.

The announcement appears to be a breach of an earlier Obama promise of not putting American “boots on the ground” in Syria.

However, the White House has stressed that the overall US strategy to fight Islamic State in Syria has not changed, and the special troops will help in coordinating ground forces and other anti-Islamic State “coalition efforts”.
