Syria refugees expected to reach 700,000 by end of 2012
September 28 , 2012
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated that as many as 700,000 people will have fled Syria by the end of 2012.
Earlier in the year, the agency expected around 100,000 people to leave the country by the end of the year.
However, that number was surpassed in July.
Around 294,000 refugees have left Syria for camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan since the start of the uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in March last year.
Between 2,000 and 3,000 refugees flee into neighboring countries every day, according to the UNHCR.
The UNHCR has appealed for $490 million to deal with the crisis.
