Spain Officially Starts Imposing Direct Rule on Catalonia from Madrid

The Spanish government has started the procedure of implementing its direct rule on Catalonia. They have fired the head of Mossos d'Esquadra (regional police force of Catalonia) Josep Lluís Trapero along with director general of the Catalan police Pere Soler. Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy has dismissed Catalonian President Carles Puigdemont and entrusted Spain Deputy PM Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría to control the regional government. Spanish PM Rajoy has also dissolved the Catalan parliament and went on to call fresh elections for December 21, where the dismissed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is allowed to contest an election. European Parliament President Antonio Tajani supported Spain’s decision to call a new election in Catalonia. The dismissed Catalan leader Puigdemont, in a pre-recorded televised statement, said that they will continue their effort of opposing the imposition of Article 155 in a democratic manner.
