Spain holds landmark elections as new parties compete for power
December 20 , 2015
Spaniards are casting their ballots in a crucial election which will see more than two political parties vie for power for the first time in recent decades.
Apart from the conservative Popular Party and the Socialists, the entry of the anti-austerity front Podemos and the liberal Citizens party has made this a landmark election.
According to opinion polls, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party has a slight lead.
Besides the economy, which has recovered somewhat from the financial crisis; unemployment; the movement for separatism in Catalonia; and corruption are key issues in the polls.
