'Slave ships' being tracked near Papua New Guinea coast: reports

  • Reports say that a fleet of about 30 Thai fishing ships crewed by “slaves” is being tracked near the coast of Papua New Guinea.

The crew running the trawlers are believed to be Burmese and the suspected criminal enterprise is bigger than earlier estimates, media reports say.

One fishing vessel was intercepted by immigration officials and its crew have been rescued. Several other slave ships are being hunted off Papua New Guinea’s south coast.
