Six arrested over India rape of Swiss woman
March 18 , 2013
Police in India's central Madhya Pradesh state have arrested six people in connection with the gang rape of a Swiss tourist.
The accused are due to be presented before a magistrate later today.
The woman was attacked while camping with her husband in a village in Datia district on Friday.
The couple had been cycling from Orchha to Agra, a distance of 155 miles, when they decided to camp overnight at the village.
According to local media reports, the victim's husband stated that the group of men had approached them at around 9:30 pm and began beating him before he was tied up. They then went on to sexually assault his wife in front of him.
The attackers also stole the couple's valuables, including $185 and a laptop computer.
The victim, 39, and her husband have since left Madhya Pradesh and arrived in the Swiss embassy in New Delhi. The Swiss embassy has demanded a thorough investigation on the incident.
The attack took place three months after the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old female student on a bus in the capital, New Delhi, which led to nationwide protests against the treatment of women in India.
