Saudi Arabia Suspended Flights to Toronto after Canada Released Detainees
August 7 , 2018
In a response to the move of the release of detained activists by Canada, Saudi Arabia has discontinued all its direct flights to the Canadian city Toronto. It has also expelled the ambassador of Canada and frozen all trade because of the "interference." However, Canada, unfazed, has stated that it won't stop advocating for human rights. Among the held was the sister of jailed blogger Raif Badawi, Samar Badawi.
Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, has shown deep concern about the expulsion of the diplomat but has stated that “Canada will always stand up for the protection of human rights, including women's rights and freedom of expression around the world. We will never hesitate to promote these values and we believe that this dialogue is critical to international diplomacy.”
