Rajapakse Wins Sri Lankan Election, Opposition Concedes Defeat

  • Sri Lanka's election commission has declared on Sunday that Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former defense minister who ended the 30-year long bloody civil war, has won the Presidential election. The EC said that the winning candidate received 52.25% of the votes against the 41.99% of the votes of his main rival and government minister Sajith Premadasa. Premadasa has conceded defeat and also congratulated Rajapaksa on his win. In a statement, Premadasa said that “It is my privilege to honor the decision of the people and congratulate Gotabaya Rajapaksa on his election as the seventh president of Sri Lanka”. He also stepped down from the deputy leader’s position of the ruling United National Party.
