Protests after Australia returns asylum seekers to Sri Lanka
July 8 , 2014
Australia is being accused of violating the convention and breaking international law after it returned 41 asylum seekers to the Sri Lankan navy.
UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, expressed deep concern over the transfer of the refugees on Sunday, who had attempted to reach Australia by boat.
Australia's immigration minister Scott Morrison said that the Australian government would continue to act “in accordance with our international obligations,” but not allow “people-smugglers” to “exploit and manipulate” the country’s support of these conventions.
