Poroshenko orders army reinforcements to key cities in Ukraine

  • Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s president, has ordered troops to important cities in the south and east to ward off any possible offensive by pro-Russia separatists.

The reinforcements would protect areas such as Mariupol and Kharkiv, he said.

Poroshenko said following the “illegal” elections held by the rebels in Donetsk and Luhansk, he may scrap a law which provides for a special status to the two regions.

Alexander Zakharchenko and Igor Plotnitsky have been sworn in as the new presidents of the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic, respectively.
