Pope Francis describes Armenian killings during Ottoman rule as 'genocide'
April 12 , 2015
Pope Francis has described the mass killings of Armenians a century ago as a “genocide”.
Many non-Turkish scholars and historians agree that the killings, which were carried out as the Ottoman rule was collapsing during World War 1, constitute genocide, but Turkey is strongly opposed to the use of that word.
The Pope, who was speaking at a Sunday Mass, said these killings along with the Nazi Holocaust and Stalinism were the three “massive” tragedies of the 20th century.
While Armenia says as many as 1.5 million people were killed in 1915-16, Turkey disputes the figures.
