Pompeo says US is Reviewing its Global Troop Deployment at the Face of Chinese Military's Threat to Other Nations

  • The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that the USA is reviewing its global deployment of forces so that they are postured appropriately for countering the growing Chinese military threat to other countries (such as India, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia) and challenges in the South China Sea region. Experts believe that the timing of Pompeo’s statement is significant as the India-China border standoff since early-May 2020 is considered a significant security posture in the South Asian and Southeast Asian regions. While responding to a question during the virtual Brussels Forum 2020 of the German Marshall Fund, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said: “We’re going to make sure we’re postured appropriately to counter the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). We think that the challenge of our times, and we’re going to make sure we have resources in place to do that.” He went on to say that the US is reducing the troops in Germany from around 52,000 to 25,000.
