Pompeo Optimistic about Protecting Kurdish Fighters in Syria
January 13 , 2019
The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has told media that he’s optimistic about reaching an agreement with Turkey for protecting Kurdish fighters of People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria after the United States leaves Syria. He made this statement in the UAE (during his Middle East tour) after talking to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu over the phone. While talking to media in Abu Dhabi, Pompeo said the US recognizes “the Turkish people's right and Erdogan's right to defend their country from terrorists”. He went on to say that the Kurdish militia (who fought side-by-side with the US against the ISIS) needs to be protected as well. Though details of the deal to protect the YPG fighters are not yet finalized, Mike Pompeo said that he’s optimistic about achieving a good outcome.
