Polio might have returned to Syria

  • Clerics and Syria recently gave their approval to people in Damascus eating dog meat. However, the bad news is that the World Health Organization now believes polio might have returned to the region.

These could be the first polio cases recorded since 1999. Other concerns include typhoid, hepatitis, measles and cases of leishmaniasis, which is a flesh-eating parasite.

The WHO is waiting to confirm if the cases were polio related but the 22 people in the province of Deir Ezzor have symptoms that show it's most likely it.

The BBC has noted that vaccination rates in Syria have fallen from 95 percent to 45 percent.
