Since the military action began nine days ago, 38 security forces and 19 civilians have been killed. The pro-Islamist Maute group is reported to have lost 120 of their fighters in clashes with the security forces.
As per reports, two SF-260 Philippine Air Force planes dropped bombs on government troops in Marawi City, killing 10 of its soldiers on the ground.
Speaking to media, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed the incident claiming it to be a result of a major miscommunication between the pilots and ground control personnel directing the attack.
The incident is a major setback to President Duterte’s efforts who has launched a major military campaign aimed at driving out armed rebels linked from Marawi City said to be linked to Islamic State.
