Oscar Pistorius breaks down in tears in court

  • South African Olympian and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears in court on Friday charged with the murder of his girlfriend.

Model Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed in the athlete’s Pretoria home on Thursday.

Prosecutors said they intended to prove that Pistorius was guilty of premeditated murder.

Police were called to the Silver Woods gated community in the suburbs of the South African administrative capital in the early hours of the morning where paramedics were treating a 29-year-old woman with four gunshot wounds to the head and upper body.

Steenkamp died at the scene, where officers later recovered a 9mm pistol.

Early reports suggested Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder.

However, according to neighbors, screaming and shouting was heard around the time of the shooting.

Police officials have said they had been called to investigate incidents of a domestic nature at the same address in the past.

They added they would also oppose any application for bail.

Popularly known as "blade runner", Pistorius was born without a fibula in both legs.

He made history at the 2012 London Games when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics.

The case has been postponed until Tuesday. Pistorius will remain in custody in the meantime.
