Obama Wary about Strongman Politics

  • Just a day after US President Donald Trump was criticized for remarks on Russia's interference in 2016 US elections, the former US President Barack Obama warned against strongman politics while delivering a speech in South Africa. He was addressing the audience ahead of the 100th anniversary of late Nelson Mandela when he ridiculed the 'utter loss of shame among political leaders' and condemned the populist movements toward authoritarianism. He told the crowd in Johannesburg, having around 15,000 people, that “The politics of fear and resentment and retrenchment began to appear. And that kind of politics is now on the move. It's on the move at a pace that would have seemed unimaginable just a few years ago.”
