Obama said Syria used chemical weapons

  • Latest Updates - US Attacks Syria

President Obama has concluded that chemical weapons had been used in the Syria attack but hasn't taken a decision about the military strike.

The president said he believes it's clear that chemical weapons had been used and they have ruled out the possibility that rebels had anything to do with it.

"We have concluded that the Syrian government, in fact, carried these out, and if that's so, then there need to be international consequences," he said.

Obama said he is not interested in "any kind of open-ended conflict on Syria". He said the action would send the Assad regime a message that it needs to stop the attacks.

The bigger message to Assad would be regarding breaking international laws and "creating a situation where US national interests are affected."
