New Bill Defines Israel to be Jewish state

  • According to a recent bill passed by Israel's parliament into law, it defines the country to be an exclusively Jewish state. The "Jewish nation state" bill says it is in the national interest to advance Jewish settlement. The bill also downgrades Arabic and states its capital as "whole and united" Jerusalem. Although Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is praising the legislation, the MPs have condemned it. The bill says that “Israel is the historic homeland of the Jewish people and they have an exclusive right to national self-determination in it.”

It was passed in the Knesset after an eight-hour-long stormy session. Fifty-Five MPs were against the bill while 62 voted in its favor.
