Nato to create 'spearhead' force in eastern Europe
September 2 , 2014
Nato says it will create a “spearhead” force comprising 4,000 troops, who can be rapidly deployed to counter the Russian threat in east Europe and the Baltic nations, according to media reports.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the secretary-general of Nato, said the high-readiness force would have the potential to “travel light but strike hard.” Regular soldiers and special forces would be part of the force, he said.
Discussions about the new force are expected to take place when Nato members meet for a summit in Wales this week. The Ukraine conflict is on top of the agenda for the meeting.
