Myanmar floods leave 85,000 homeless
August 26 , 2012
85,000 people have been left homeless following heavy flooding in Myanmar.
The Irrawaddy Delta, where 130,000 people lost their lives in a cyclone in 2008, has been the worst affected.
President Thein Sein said the government has set up more than 200 emergency relief centers to assist those forced to leave their homes.
Unseasonal heavy monsoon rains have also flooded around 250,000 hectares of rice fields.
Next year's rice harvest is expected to be affected. The crop is a key export for the country and makes up the staple diet for most of the population.
