Missing plane is hundreds of miles off course

The search operation for the missing Malaysian Airlines has been expanded to the west since the plane is said to have ended up hundreds of miles away from its path.
A recent report suggests that its last known destination is above a small island known as Pulau Perek, which would mean that the aircraft turned west after about an hour of taking off instead of going northeast toward Vietnam.
The New York Times notes that "conflicting accounts of the course change and what may have happened afterward" added to the confusion regarding the investigation. A non-military official mentioned that the report is only one of the many theories being looked at.
