LGBT rights: President Obama calls for an end to 'conversion therapies'

  • US President Barack Obama has called for an end to therapies that try to change sexual orientations of LGBT youngsters.

In a statement, the White House said that there was “overwhelming scientific evidence” that conversion therapy was “neither medically nor ethically appropriate.”

The statement came after a petition urged Obama to extend support to a law seeking a ban on conversion therapy.

The suicide of Leelah Alcorn, a teenage transgender youth who was reportedly forced to attend such therapy sessions, triggered the petition.
