Iván Duque Assumes Post of Colombia's President

  • Iván Duque, Colombia's newly-elected President, has assumed charge of the office on Tuesday. He has pledged to improve economic growth and unite the country. The conservative politician was elected in June after contesting Gustavo Petro, a rival from left-wing. Mr. Duque, also a former lawyer, talked about invigorating the economy and tackling corruption in his inaugural speech. He has also vowed to modify the peace deal made with the Farc rebel group. However, he is advised by the outgoing President Juan Manuel Santos to respect the deal. The deal was made in 2016 to end the 5-decade civil conflict in the country.
