Italy's coastguard and navy rescue nearly 6,000 migrants

  • Italian coastguard and navy personnel have rescued close to 6,000 migrants over the weekend as increasing numbers of people attempt to cross over to Europe from north Africa via the Mediterranean sea route. However, nine migrants died after their boat sank around 80 miles from the Libyan coast, reports said. Around 144 people were saved in that operation.

The total number of people who have reached Italy in 2015 by this route has already crossed 15,000, according to figures provided by the International Organization for Migration.
