Italy sees Dramatic Rise in COVID-19 Deaths & Infections, Quarantines 16 Million People
March 8 , 2020
Italy has quarantined 16 million people in Northern Italy by locking down the Lombardy region as well as 14 other provinces until April 3. The new measures have been put into place after a sudden escalation in Italy’s effort of containing the COVID-19 coronavirus situation due to a steep rise in virus infections on Saturday. The events involving a large gathering of people such as weddings and funerals have been canceled. Other public areas where a large number of people gather such as gymnasiums, ski resorts, museums, and pools will also be closed to contain the spread of coronavirus. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said that these measures will also be implemented in Milan (the financial center of Italy) and Venice (the tourism hotspot of Italy). On Saturday, the death toll and coronavirus infection cases shot up by 50 and more than 1,200 respectively. Till yesterday, more than 230 people have died and 5,883 people infected by 2019-nCov coronavirus in Italy, the worst affected country in Europe.
