Italian President Giorgio Napolitano re-elected

  • Italian President Giorgio Napolitano was re-elected on Saturday following an appeal to run for office again in a bid to end an escalating political crisis.

Napolitano, aged 87, won the required 504 votes in parliament after claiming a majority out of 1,007 electors. Both left and right party politicians chose the president after five rounds of voting failed to produce a result.

A caretaker government has been governing the country after February's inconclusive general elections.

Napolitano is the first president in Italian history to win a second seven-year term.
