Italian coastguard rescues more than 2,000 migrants off Libyan coast
February 16 , 2015
Over 2,000 migrants were rescued by Italy’s coastguard near the Libyan coast on Sunday.
Reports said that search teams were confronted with gunmen who approached them in a boat from Libya.
The rescue comes after last week’s Mediterranean Sea disaster in which some 300 migrants are believed to have died after their boats encountered rough weather.
Another major operation was carried out by the Italian coastguard on Friday, with around 600 people rescued.
An estimated 3,500 people died while attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea in 2014, according to the UNHRC.
