Italian coast guard rescues hundreds of migrants in the Mediterranean

  • The Italian coast guard says it has rescued 2,452 migrants in 11 separate but coordinated operations in the Mediterranean Sea.

The latest rescue effort comes as Italy faces a surge in migrants trying to cross over to the country, which is considered to be a gateway to Europe.

The International Organization for Migration says around 34,570 migrants, mostly desperate people escaping conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, have reached Italian shores from January 1 to May 7. An estimated 1,780 migrants died at sea during the journey.
