Isis seizes key airbase in Syria - the Tabqa airbase

  • Isis militants have seized an important airbase in Syria.

Tabqa airbase was the final stronghold of the government led by Bashar al-Assad in Raqqa province.

Government troops left the airbase after days of heavy fighting which claimed hundreds of lives, reports said.

According to estimates, around 200,000 people have died in the Syrian conflict so far.

Though the United States has hit Isis targets in Iraq, no such strikes against the Islamist fighters have been carried out in Syria.
